Vic continues his studies of North American wildlife and turns his attention to the giant of the North American forests and wastelands...the Moose. “These majestic, noble creatures, who can stand upward to 7’ high and weigh anywhere from 1,200 - 1,600 pounds, are extremely powerful and are indigenous to Alaska, the Northwest Territories of Canada and the United States. They are also found in Europe and Russia, but as a sculptor, I am drawn to the bull moose found in North America, where you can find some of the largest moose antlers in the Yukon Territory. With my latest sculpture, I wanted to capture the beauty and the peculiar grace that these giants of the forest possess. I feel the bull moose is at its most handsome in the autumn. During this season, the male bull moose will perform behaviors not seen at any other time of the year. Every September and October, the usually solitary bull will begin the dance of autumn by bellowing loudly to attract mates. They will battle other bulls for dominance and mating supremacy echoing the sounds of their violent fights throughout the forest. Last month after all the art shows were over, I headed to the mountains just outside of Dubois, WY for a week long elk hunt. I was pleasantly surprised to come across several of these beautiful creatures in the area. It is my hope to capture the feeling, emotion, power and unusual beauty that they possess with “Giants of the Northern Forests.
