I have taken a couple of workshops from Kimbal Warren and after I mentioned we were going to visit Santa Fe he and his wife Gayle mentioned to check out Santa Fe Trails Gallery. It was great to see a large piece by Kimbal as I have only seen his smaller plein air work.
The work the gallery represents is outstanding. Also, the gallery is well lit, laid out, and comfortable for contemplation. I was also intrigued by the work of David Santillanes. What caught my eye was his use of brush stroke and scale. Someone once mentioned while painting, “Suggest don’t illustrate.” After reading David’s Artist statement to, “. . . capture and convey [a scene’s] essence”, the advice to suggest holds true in his work. The scale of his work of course invites the viewer immediately into the scene. These are things I have noted to commit to my own work.
Thank you again and I hope to visit Santa Fe Trails Gallery again soon.
“During a recent road trip, my wife and I purchased a Vic Payne bronze sculpture titled “The Hunter Becomes The Hunted” from Mountain Trails Fine Art in Santa Fe. The gallery is beautiful featuring artwork of the American West by Vic Payne and many other renowned artists. We made our purchase late in the afternoon the day before we planned to drive back to our home in the Pacific Northwest and just as the gallery was about to close. We worked with Sonia Leyba, a fine art consultant there who was friendly, accomodating, and professional. At our request, she stayed after hours that afternoon to professionally package the piece so we could transport it home with us the next day to avoid the cost and time it would take to have it shipped by a third-party. As we agreed, before it opened the following morning she returned to the gallery to open up and help me load the package into our SUV for the 1,500 mile drive home which we then completed without incident. The stunning sculpture now dominates a corner of our living room. We like it so much we’re considering another road trip back to Santa Fe including a stop at the gallery to look for other pieces next year.” - Richard M.
