“Plains Sentinel” 22” x 15” x 1.5 is made from an Australian Red Mallee burl slab.  I retained the natural edge and the fantastic wood grain of the burl. The center of the piece represents a quilled medallion turned on the lathe then enhanced with pyrography and acrylic paint.  A brass coin, antique trade beads, brass cones, horse and porcupine hair were added. The feather represents a wing feather from a Great Horned Owl and is carved from maple then textured with pyrography and painted with acrylic paint.  To Native Americans the Great Horned Owl symbolizes intuition and wisdom because it has keen eyesight and hearing with the ability to see in darkness.  The feather of the owl represents courage, strength and insight.  Perched high atop a tree this majestic bird is the “Plains Sentinel”
