Winner of the Ray Swanson Memorial Award at the 2021 Cowboy Artists of America Show & Sale

The Ray Swanson Memorial Award was added at the request of the Swanson Family with full CAA member support, to honor longtime CAA member, Ray Swanson, who passed away in 2004. The award is an artifact from Ray’s personal collection. The award is given for a work of art that best communicates a moment in time and captures the emotion of that moment.

There is nothing better than good stories and good company. This sculpture was inspired by the story of an old trail cowboy, describing his first meeting with famed Texas trail-driver Teddy Blue Abbott in a saloon in Red Lodge, Montana. Boy, I would have loved to have been able to hear the tales these characters would have told.
