Traditionally, Zuni women made the pottery for food and water storage. The women were sensitive to the voice of the “being “of the clay, and to the purpose of the end product. A particular symbol on the pots especially intrigued me; the line that divides the neck from the body of the jar. This is called “onane,” or “road,” which is the Zuni word for the span of life. They associate it with the life of the potter and, interestingly, it’s always left un-joined.
